How to connect the USB MSR encoder

How to connect the USB MSR encoder

Purpose: This page provides instructions on how to connect the USB Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) encoder to your computer for use with Door Access Client.

Prerequisites:

  • A compatible USB MSR encoder.

  • The Door Access Client application open in a Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser. Other browsers are not supported.

  • Ensure only one browser tab is opened to avoid reader conflict.

Steps:

  1. Physical Connection:

    • Locate a free USB port on your computer. If available, a USB 2.0 port (typically black or white) is preferred over a USB 3.0 port (typically blue). While USB 3.0 ports will generally work, USB 2.0 ports have been found to provide a more stable connection with some MSR encoder models.

    • Plug the MSR encoder's USB cable firmly into the port. Avoid using USB hubs if possible; connect directly to the computer.

  2. Software Connection (Browser Prompt):

    • In Door Access client, click the button in the menu labeled Connect USB MSR.

    • A browser prompt will appear (usually at the top of the browser window, near the address bar). This prompt is asking you to grant the Door Access Client permission to access the MSR encoder.

    • Select the MSR encoder from the list of devices. It will usually be be labeled as "MSR Reader in FS Mode"

    • Click the "Connect" button in the browser prompt.

  3. Verification:

    • If the connection is successful, the button in the Door Access Client should change to show "MSR Connected," and the button color should become green.

    • The green light on the MSR encoder itself should also be steadily lit. This indicates that the reader is ready.

Troubleshooting MSR Connection Issues:

  • No Prompt Appears:

    • Refresh the Page: Try refreshing the Door Access Client page in your browser.

    • Check Physical Connection: Ensure the USB cable is securely plugged into both the MSR encoder and the computer. Try a different USB port, preferably a USB 2.0 port if available.

    • Close Other Tabs: Make sure only one browser tab with the Door Access Client is open. Multiple tabs can conflict with the MSR connection.

    • Restart Your Browser: Close all browser windows and tabs, then reopen the browser and navigate to the Door Access Client.

    • Restart Your Computer: A full computer restart can sometimes resolve USB device issues.

  • "MSR Connected" Doesn't Appear (or is Red):

    • Compatibility: If you are not using the officially support card reader, switch to it.

    • Permissions: Double-check that you have allowed the website to have access to the MSR.

    • Wrong Device Selected (Rare): If you see multiple devices in the browser prompt, make sure you selected the correct one. Try disconnecting and reconnecting, and carefully choose the MSR device.

  • Solid Red Light on MSR:

    • Verify only one tab is open and connected to Door Access Client.

    • Verify the card is being swiped in a consistent fluid motion.

    • If it stays red, try disconnecting and reconnecting the reader, and/or restarting the browser.

  • No Lights at all:

    • Check the physical connection.

    • Try a different computer.

    • The MSR could be defective and need to be replaced.

  • Still Having Trouble? If you've tried all of the above steps and the MSR encoder still won't connect, contact the CSG Helpdesk for assistance. Provide as much detail as possible about the issue, including any error messages you see and the troubleshooting steps you've already tried.
