PATH for sak-868---Migration from AFS for file sharing to SAN.

ActivityObjectiveStepsResources| Complete the 2-server test with Mario and Luigi as client and database (Luigi is partitioned as server and database). | Determine if OCFS2 is set up correctly.

Determine if OCFS2 can store and share files at least as well as AFS.

Determine if OCFS2 is a show stopper for Sakai

Set a key datapoint for management to authorize going to a full 4-6 node test.
| Set up a new Sakai cluster for Mario and Luigi.  Conduct another rsync also.  Bring over another snap from Prod internal database.

Conduct QA functional test: Can they store doc as in afs and retrieve them?  Use Modules and Resources regression tests.

Conduct load test using Modules for creating, storing and retrieving shared files on the SAN.

Conduct a load test using the appropriate sakai tool to determine whether or not explicit locking is a problem for our version of OCFS2/Linux. | Programmers

Conduct research to see which other institutions are using OCFS2 for file sharing.

Determine the installation base.  How successful have others been?  Are people abandoning ocfs2?  What are the major problems?

Find ocfs2 users.
Contact them.  Ask about their experience.  List pros and cons.

This is a potential site:

Patrick

Build a budget (ball park) and alternate implementation time line(s) so that directors have an expectation.
Compare ocfs2 to other file sharing solutions.
What is the cost benefit for each?

Determine how much we can afford.

Determine which SAN configurations can be purchased by the DC (switches, fibre channels), which by ATS?

Determine the feasibility of the transition for the various solutions.
Document our local expertise vs. the various options to understand the peripheral costs.  e.g. if we have no experience with a NetApp applicance then how feasible is this for us to implement or what would this say about the timeline since a local learning curve would have to be taken into account.

Sandra, Kirk, Patrick and Joncarlo

Conduct the virtual 6 app server ocfs2 test.

Determine if the ocfs2 file sharing locks hold up under the 6 app server configuration.

Determine if ocfs2 file sharing is scalable.

Determine whether or not OCFS2 ignores file locking  if Java obtains it locks using native flock, aka 'explicit locking'.

Identify space in the virtualization project space.

Build the 7 app server cluster for Sakai.

Conduct functional QA test.

Conduct load test using modules for creating, storing, sharing, and retrieving files to the SAN.

Conduct a load test using the appropriate sakai tool to determine whether or not explicit locking is a problem for our version of OCFS2/Linux.
